The short answer. For a quick animated post built from a stock template, Canva is hard to beat. When the text itself should move in a way people notice, with variable font axes, font morphing, 3D type or shader looks, Swash gives you far more control and stays free to start.

Where Swash goes further
Motion you can tune. Canva applies preset animations to a whole element, each up to 10 seconds. Swash presets have every setting open in the inspector, they stack, and the timeline sets exactly when each one plays. See Presets.
Variable fonts. Canva’s help states it does not support variable fonts. In Swash, weight and width can swell and wave across the letters, which is one of the most striking ways to animate type.
Real 3D type and shaders. Shape text into rings, spheres and tunnels that turn in 3D, then add halftone, dither, CRT or pixel sort over the whole frame. See Camera and 3D and Effects and shaders.
Widgets and whole reels. A terminal that types, chat bubbles, counters, falling pills, galleries and a cursor sit next to your type on one timeline, so a full product reel comes out of one project. See Widgets.
Sound on every plan. Over 270 built-in sounds play on each move. In Canva, sound effects are part of the paid plans.

Swash and Canva questions
Can I use Swash and Canva together?
Yes. Make the animated type in Swash, export an MP4 or GIF and place it in your Canva design like any other video.
Does Canva support variable fonts?
No. Canva’s help says it does not support variable fonts. Swash animates their axes, such as weight and width.
Which one is easier?
Canva is simpler for one-click animations on a finished design. Swash takes a few minutes to learn and gives you motion that you can shape: start from a preset or a template and change the words.
